Caring for the Church
The church is in the charge of the Historic Churches Scotland and was the inspiration behind the setting up of the Trust in 1996. The SRCT preserves places of worship of outstanding national importance which are no longer used for religious purposes, and safeguards them for current and future generations.
Since taking ownership of the East Church in 1998 the Historic Churches Scotland (formerly SRCT) has worked with local people to secure the long-term future of the building through re-establishing it at the heart of the community. Decay and damp threatened the survival of the church, but its plight came to the attention of the nation in 2006 when it was a finalist in the BBC ‘Restoration Village’ series.
Funding success followed in 2007 when the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a major grant towards the £1.3 million project. Historic Scotland and The Highland Council were also major funders.Weddings at the church

It is fascinating not only to study the building fabric and try and work out some of the stages in the church’s development, but also to look at the archaeology within the church.”
